On pally tanking...

Why are prot pallies so insecure?

Pallies are, hands down, the best aoe tanks around. Nuttin, but nuttin, is gettin aggro offa em with aoe spells.

Problem is, with the crazy itemization right now, pally tanks simply have too damn many problems getting the right gear. Which leads to pallies tanking level 70 instances with 7.5k health. (Iv'e seen it! The horror! The horror!)

So, a buncha prot pallies that can get two shot before a healer can save em.

I have no problems with pally tanks. I doan pull aggro offa em, so they do their jobs. But it's too damn hard to keep em alive some times :(

However, 2.3 is coming out, and one of the bigger surprises... every damn talent in the protect tree is gonna give pallies 10% more sta...

I shit you not!

2.3 is alive on PTR...

Weapon Expertise (Protection) renamed Combat Expertise, now increases expertise by 1/2/3/4/5 and total Stamina by 2/4/6/8/10%.

sigh... It will be the same thing as it was with the Druids. You can't take away ultimate tanking from the warrior cuz you already kicked his ass for Fury DPS. If the pally tank becomes more popular than the warr tank, there will be another rebellion that will leave the pally tank with a nerf.

Well if I remember correctly early on in TBC Feral Druids were considered the primo tank. Then by the time raiding started it they became the OT and were only main tank in regular five-man instances and heroics only if they were geared with raid equipment. Mostly it was a result of nerfing/itemization. Prot Warriors in endgame have a lot better gear and "oh shit" buttons than a feral druid does. Eventually I see the same happening to Prot Paladins they might become a bit of a fad for a while but eventually they'll be put to OT duties for the raids and be MT only in five mans.

hunters are getting the shaft in this patch.. no new good gear, the trolls and dwarfs are getting nerfed, and the major issues aren't being addressed.

The only bone they are throwing hunters is larger ammo pouches and quivers...

I actually liked that stings and damaging traps do more damage based on a percentage of RAP which is more than what we had before. The added chance to dispell a magical effect from arcane shot seems weird though.

@sonvar - your comments might apply to the most elite raiding guilds in the world, but most raiding guilds don't have the ability to just swap in and out whatever class is currently en vogue for tanking, particularly when you consider player skill and dedication. My guild's MT is a Pally because he is the most fanatical person we've got about researching and gearing up in any way he can. The money he's dropped getting the best pieces of gear possible boggle my mind.

Our #2 tank, who has been MTing Kara for Attumen, Moroes, Opera, and Maiden, is a Druid, who is also really well-geared and dedicated.

Anyway, I don't think the bit about which class is in fashion really applies to most guilds, even raiding guilds. What Blizz has done here is give Pallies a buff to help create more parity to where you can do almost any encounter with any tanking class, as long as they are good. This brings tanks in line with DPS and healers in that respect, because there are very few encounters where you MUST have one DPS or healing class over another. It encourages diversity, people playing the way they want to play, and running with whoever you like instead of some hired gun because his class happens to be the buffest at the moment.

I guess to correct myself its not so much that I don't think pally/druid tanks aren't viable to MT in endgame raids its just that I find Prot Warriors to be the best MT available.

@ Sonvar

Yeah, the traps will be more useful, so we might actually use something besides freeze trap.

I do feel sorry for the troll and dwarf hunters... glad I picked a Draenai for my hunter...

@sonvar - Warriors have a lot of utility that both Pallies and Druids would kill for, no doubt. Intervene and the ability to interrupt casting would be two right off the top of my head.

That said, I think it's cool that all the tanking classes do their thing a little differently, just like Mages DPS and CC in different ways than Hunters do.
